A Roman Centurion Believes

Ref. Acts 10 arg_372492_fnt_uk“All the prophets testify about Jesus that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” This was Peter’s simple message to Cornelius.

Cornelius was a Roman Centurion whose heart longed for God. Born and raised in a culture too sophisticated to bother with the God of Israel, yet he felt that there was a Holy God who sees; so he conducted his life with God in mind, despite his society. Many today would see such a man and say that his good works were right enough to earn him a place in heaven. Not so, but his heart was right enough to listen to the testimony about Jesus.

Cornelius’ heart was so intent on knowing God that as he prayed he received a vision of an angel of God. In this vision, the angel told him about a man named Peter, who had what Cornelius needed. Cornelius was so excited to hear from this man Peter, that as he sent for him he gathered together his friends and family. Can you imagine that—calling together your friends to hear from someone you don’t even know? This shows Cornelius’ faith and expectation of something good.

When Peter arrived for those gathered at Cornelius’ house, his message was not complicated. He didn’t tell Cornelius that he needed to do just a few more good works; he didn’t suggest that he convert or follow a few new rules. No—Peter told about Jesus, and the way to God through believing in Him. And it is the same for you today; for, “All the prophets testify about Jesus that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” (Acts 10:43)

Pray, and ask Jesus to enter in and take away all your sin. Let His forgiveness wash away all guilt, and let Him be the Lord of your life.
